Why do we need to save money?

Updated: Aug 17, 2021

"Money can't buy happiness."

We saw this motivational quote once or twice before. However, I beg to disagree with this because in our society, "Money makes the world go round.". It's a tough bitter pill to swallow but this is our reality. We were born into this world and educated to become proper citizens and help in our country's economy. We need money to eat, have fun, travel, etc. We even need money when our life ends. Everything revolves around money! (*me singing Abba's Money, Money, Money)

I still remember that feeling when I lost my wallet that contained my Jeepney fare to go home from school when I was a kid. I was panicking inside, trying hard not to cry and sweating cold all over. It wasn't a fun situation and I ended up walking ~5KM back home. What is the moral of the story? Everybody knows the feeling of being stressed out because you don't have money to pay for something necessary. The feeling of insecurity because you don't know where you're getting money for your next month's rent, for your child's tuition, and utility bills.

So going back on the main topic, why do we need to save? Here's a few:

  1. Avoiding the miserable feeling of insecurity. - The feeling that you can pay for all your necessities gives you peace of mind!

  2. We want to have fun! - We want to work because we also want to enjoy the fruits of our labor. It makes all the effort in making money worth it, right?

  3. For Life's Uncertainties - Nobody wants to think that anything unfortunate would happen to them. But this COVID-19 pandemic taught us so much about uncertainties. No one in this generation ever thought that this was going to happen (well, except Bill Gates). What if you suddenly lost your job tomorrow? What if you get sick? A lot of what ifs right there but this is reality. You’ll need a “buffer” that you can shell out when life gives you lemons. You have to prepare for it.

  4. Big Purchases - Weren't you eyeing that nice red car yesterday? Did you just go site viewing with your real estate agent for that house you like? Weren't you preparing for your EuroTrip next year? These are considered big purchases because you will need considerable amount of money to acquire these.

These are just a few things at the top of my head. In conclusion, we need money and that is why we save. We need it to live. Saving can give you freedom in your own terms.

P.S Whoever made that quote simply just didn't know where to go shopping. :-p
